Minimally Invasive Surgery Q & A

Minimally invasive surgery is performed using tiny incisions in the abdomen and long, thin surgical instruments attached to a camera to diagnose and treat different conditions.

Unlike traditional surgery where large incisions are made, with minimally invasive surgery, most patients will go home the same day and have less pain and faster recovery. Also, there is less risk for wound complications like infection and wound breakdown.

Minimally invasive surgery could be performed using laparoscopy, hysteroscopy or robotic surgery.

Endoscopic procedures are used in both the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions.  Some of the conditions that Dr. Bardawil uses laparoscopy to diagnose and treat include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Adenomyosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Sterilization or tubal ligation
  • Risk-reducing surgery for ovarian cancer

Dr. Bardawil has extensive experience performing minimally invasive surgery to address a wide range of conditions. Some of the most common procedures he performs include:

Hysteroscopy

A procedure using a hysteroscope to remove fibroids or polyps from inside the uterus. Also, it is used to remove retained (stuck) IUD and uterine adhesions or scars to improve fertility.  The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and into the natural opening of the cervix. Dr. Bardawil performs most of the hysteroscopies in his office using local anesthesia.

Myomectomy

Myomectomies are performed to remove fibroids from the walls of your uterus to treat pelvic pain, heavy periods or improve fertility.  Dr. Bardawil will evaluate the size and location of the fibroids and he will counsel you for the best approach.

Hysterectomy

Sometimes it’s necessary to remove your entire uterus to address fibroids, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, precancerous conditions or cancer. Minimally invasive hysterectomies remove the uterus through the vagina or through smaller incisions in the abdomen.  Dr. Bardawil will discuss with you your options and whether a hysterectomy is the right choice for you.

Diagnostic laparoscopy and endometriosis

Diagnostic laparoscopy is performed to identify the cause of pelvic pain.  It is typically performed with cystoscopy to rule out interstitial cystitis.  During the procedure, any endometriosis will be resected and any pelvic adhesions will be removed.

Ovarian cystectomy

Sometimes ovarian cysts need to be removed.  This is typically done using the laparoscope and during the procedure, the cyst is removed with extreme care not to cause any damage to ovaries and fallopian tubes. Sometimes depending on the type of cyst and your age, the entire ovary needs to be removed.  Dr. Bardawil, however, will discuss all options with you and will review his recommendations in detail.

Minimally invasive surgery offers several benefits compared to traditional, open surgery, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Reduced chance of infection
  • Reduced risk of complications
  • Shorter hospital stay if any
  • Shorter recovery period

Several types of minimally invasive surgery can be performed as outpatient procedures that don’t require a hospital stay.
